Turf Magazine - New Sustainable Fertilizers From Building Waste, Rain & Solar Energy
New Sustainable Fertilizers From Building Waste, Rain & Solar Energy mention in Turf Magazine.
Global Fertilizer Outlook
Farm Progress reports 'Global nitrogen markets are expected to remain constrained by fluctuations in European production, Chinese export restrictions, and small Russian pipeline exports.'
Not so in Portland, Oregon where NRS is making fossil-fuel-free fertilizer from recovered nutrients, rain, and solar energy at the PAE Living Building.
Contractors are noticing!
Building Waste Repurposed to Create Sustainable Fertilizer. Nutrient Recovery Services (NRS), a small minority-owned Oregon manufacturer, has achieved a remarkable milestone in sustainable agriculture with the production of the first-of-its-kind fertilizer. Operating inside the PAE Building in downtown Portland, Oregon, NRS creates a sustainable fertilizer from the building’s waste, rainwater, and solar energy.
This Building Gets The Gold
From the outside, the PAE Living Building in Portland, Oregon, is nondescript. Its gray colors and rectangular shape blend into the historic district. But this five story, office building gets the gold for recycling. Rainwater, greywater and even urine, are all reused. And it’s the first building in the world to create carbon-neutral fertilizers from our body’s waste.
Update from the garden
...another Update from the Garden:
Sustainability wizard Elizabeth Heider sends her love and honey from her garden hives! She used our hashtag#fertilizer on annuals and perennials and reports, 'between my biennial bloom and your fertilizer, the garden is out performing this year'!
Kudos to you my hashtag#LivingBuildingHero!
Hello East Coast!
Our #fertilizer (made at the #PAELivingBuilding) is performing well on the East Coast. Thanks Scott Kelly for the report from the #garden!
